Called to Serve

The permanent diaconate is a living sign of Christ the Servant — men ordained to preach the Word, celebrate the sacraments, and serve the poor in the name of the Church across Ireland.

Our Mission

Rooted in Scripture. Renewed at Vatican II. Present in Ireland Today.

The permanent diaconate is one of the oldest orders of the Church, restored by the Second Vatican Council as a permanent and distinct ministry. Deacons are ordained men — married or celibate — who serve at the altar, proclaim the Gospel, preach, baptise, witness marriages, and bring the sacraments to the sick and dying.

Across the dioceses of Ireland, permanent deacons are a growing presence: in parishes, hospitals, prisons, and schools. They are husbands, fathers, and professionals who answer a call to serve the People of God in the midst of ordinary life.

Is God Calling You?

The call to the diaconate is not a career choice — it is a response to the movement of the Holy Spirit, confirmed by the Church. If you are a baptised Catholic man, married or single, and you feel drawn to a life of ordained service, we invite you to take the first step: to pray, to listen, and to enquire.
